Dinh Van is a French jewelry brand, founded in 1965 by the French-Vietnamese jeweler Jean Dinh Van. After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts, he worked for ten years at Cartier, where he created jewelry for an elite clientele, including the Duchess of Windsor.
In 1965, Jean Dinh Van opened his own workshop on Place Gaillon in Paris. He aimed to design luxury jewelry suitable for everyday use, featuring minimalist and modern designs. His creations were characterized by pure, simple, and soft shapes, both contemporary and timeless.
One of his most famous designs is the ‘Two Pearl’ ring from 1967, created for Pierre Cardin. This ring featured a square band with two freely moving pearls of different colors, which was revolutionary at the time.
In 1976, Dinh Van opened his first boutique on Rue de la Paix in Paris, followed by stores in New York and Geneva. His designs were inspired by everyday objects such as safety pins, razor blades, and handcuffs, which he transformed into high-quality jewelry.
In the 1980s, he collaborated with the French sculptor César to create a gold pendant in the shape of a woman’s breast. In the 1990s, he protested against the relaxation of French gold laws by designing a collection of jewelry made from pure 24-carat gold, called ‘Pi Chinois.’
In 1998, Jean Dinh Van retired and sold his company, including the rights to his name. However, the brand continues to exist and is renowned for its minimalist and innovative designs that break traditional jewelry codes.
